The Water-Babies
Charles Kingsley
Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, [No Date] circa 1927
A volume in Tuck’s ‘Golden Treasury Library’ series. Published in the 1920s/early 1930s, titles originally came with a dustwrapper and bound in red, green or blue cloth. Difficult to date accurately without a helpful contemporary ownership inscription.
The Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrated edition of “The Water-Babies” was first published by Raphael Tuck in 1915 with twelve colour plates. This copy in a smaller format and with six colour plates is a volume in the “Golden Treasury Library”.
The publisher’s catalogue bound in at the rear lists eight titles; promotional material for 1934 states twenty-one titles in the series.
Hardback – publisher’s cloth with inlay label/plate to front board, gilt title to spine. pp. 280, [8] catalogue, including b/w illustrations plus colour plates. 7.75 x 5.25 inches approx. (197mm x 133mm).
Light wear and rubbing to cloth; minor crushing to spine ends; corner tips a touch knocked and turned-in; light rubbing and scratching to inlay plate; bump to top edge of front board with resultant split to cloth. Creasing to front endpaper; light foxing to first few pages and scattered foxing throughout but generally pages very clean; spotting to edges of page-block.
Overall, a nice, clean and particularly well preserved copy – quite lovely.
